When is it time to ask about pool filter cleaning?

dirty and a clean pool filter cartridge

“How often should I clean the filter?” sounds like a calendar question, but the useful answer starts with the filter itself. Its model, clean operating pressure, recent workload and service history all help a professional assess it. A date alone does not describe what is happening in your pool.

Use the right baseline for your equipment

A pressure reading is meaningful in context. Compare it with the normal clean reading for your system under the same operating conditions, and use the guidance for your specific filter model. Do not assume that a neighbor’s pressure or a generic number online applies to yours.

Pentair describes pressure increases above the starting baseline as a cleaning indicator for certain cartridge filters. It also recommends professional filter maintenance. Filter equipment operates under pressure; this guide is about what to report, not instructions to open or dismantle it.

Gather details without taking anything apart

If you can see the information safely from outside the equipment, send a photo of the filter label and pressure gauge. If you cannot, say that the model or baseline is unknown. That is a normal starting point for a service inquiry.

  • Filter brand and model, if visible.
  • Date of the last cleaning, if known.
  • Current gauge reading and the usual clean reading, if recorded.
  • Recent changes in water clarity or visible circulation.
  • Recent heavy debris, cleanup work or equipment changes.

Keep cleaning and diagnosis separate

A quote for a filter clean should describe the work being offered. It should also leave room to discuss findings rather than assuming every water or circulation problem will disappear after cleaning. Share symptoms when you request the quote instead of choosing a service solely because the water looks different.

For cartridge and DE filter cleaning, Joy Pool’s listed scope includes teardown and cleaning, inspection of internal components and seals, fresh DE where needed, and a pressure check with the clean baseline recorded. The owner confirms the work appropriate to your equipment.

Make the next visit easier to plan

Keep a simple record of the service date, what was done and the resulting pressure reading. Include any recommended follow-up. When you ask about the next cleaning, those details make the conversation more specific than trying to remember whether the filter was serviced recently.

If you already receive weekly pool service, ask how filter cleaning is scheduled and priced within that arrangement. If you only want a filter-cleaning quote, provide your zip and either email or phone. No equipment knowledge is required to start the conversation.
